I had one like that for a few years. I'm not sure why they felt the need, but it was pretty annoying to live with..

I have that exact same mower as a spare. Not sure why the mystery about the wheel arrangement. It allows you to have either a bagger or a direct discharge in the same arrangement. The advangement is it really tosses the clippings, distributing them well.

Those old Lawn Boys were the best mowers though, which someone would reverse engineer the molds and cast new decks

They c la imed it was an “Anti-scalping” design, but mostly ot made it them impossible to push over une ven terrain. Those decks did/do have excellent clearing though, and are nearly impossible to clog, even in super heavy grass. At our cabin in Maine we had one of those old Lawn Boys to cut the grass... which we did once, maybe twice a year. It would chew through 2.5-3ft tall crap and never clog up. when the old Lawn Boy 2-stroke got too worn out to run worth a shit any more, we built an adapt er plate to put a Briggs on it and keep using the same deck.

I want some statistics on how many sales they’ve lost for triggering everyone’s OCD.

Weird but not too weird . And every first owner got 20 years of them, some 25.

I believe lawn boys are designed to mainly turn right and that’s why the wheels are offset like that. Try mowing in a huge decreasing radius box instead of back and forth strips. It’s been a few decades since I used one but I seem to recall that’s the secret.

They bag and discharge extremely well, and are almost impossible to clog.

I think you might be off-base here. The blade spins clockwise when viewed from above. If the front of the mower points left, then the arrows represent the direction cut grass tends to go. If the light green is tall grass and dark green is cut grass, then you can see why the Lawn Boy discharge at the front of the mower would be more efficient at discharging the cut grass. The exception is the small strip “behind” the chute. That grass would have to make the full loop to escape. I think the typical side discharge is better at giving all the freshly cut grass an opportunity to escape on the first round, but it looks like the Lawn Boy design might be better at moving more grass out more efficiently.

That window arrangement was pretty common on early jets, at least those from Douglas. The Chinese changed that look when they built the ARJ-21 using the tooling and design leftover from the days when they built a handful of MD-80s, although they claim that it’s a clean sheet design (yeah, right...)
Way back when, curved glass in aviation was rare and expensive, hence the flat panes.

You might be right but I do think the natural right-turning preference was developed further and it isn’t an afterthought

We both might be wrong. This came from an old lawn boy ad:
“ Only Lawn-Boy gives your lawn “contour cut”. This is an exclusive feature —- made possible by the Lawn-Boy’s wheel placement design —- prevents scalping. It means the blade won’t dig into humps or bumps in your lawn. No more worrying about chopped up lawn surfaces.”
